Ayurveda
: Ancient Heritage in the Age of Globalisation
In my presentation, the first particular slide is
offering the salutation to Lord Buddha about which I will
be deliberating upon later. This happens to be second
verse in one of the three great treatises of Ayurveda and
it offers the salutation to Buddha who with discriminative
intelligence controls the mind which is like a snake.
Vagbhatta , who is author of Astanga Sangraha is believed
to be a Buddhist. Similarly, Caraka, the author of Caraka
Samhita or the editor of Charak samhita was also believed
to be a physician in the court of a Buddhist king Kaniska in

century AD. Jivaka whom I am sure all of you are aware
of, was a Buddhist physician or a personal physician to
Lord Buddha was also an ayurvedic physician. Nagarjuna
who contributed a lot to the metal, mineral aspect
of Ayurveda, was also an Ayurveda practitioner. So
Ayurveda in many ways is in fact connected to thoughts
of Buddhism. I am sure that it will help us to connect with
Ayurveda especially for the people of Thailand much
easily. In his introductory remark, Dr. Amarjivawas telling
about my overseas travels. I am fortunate that inside or
outside the country I got chances to talk about Ayurveda.
Interestingly, inside the country also all of us not just me,
many ayurvedic physicians travel up and down talking
Ayurveda to both Ayurvedic and non – Ayurvedic people.
This month, I had two opportunities to speak about
Ayurveda to a group of psychologists. There my topic was
