A message from the Director
Dr. Sophana Srichampa
Institute of Language and Culture for Rural Development
Mahidol University
The Institute of Language and Culture for Rural Development
evolved from the Center of Southeast Asian Languages and Cultures
established in 1974 and restructured as an institute in 1980. As a research
institution, we focus on research in 8 specific areas according to the
expertise and specialization of the academic staff. The research outcomes
have provided new knowledge in the fields of local and neighboring
languages, cultures, communication, translation, development and ethnic
groups for the Thai society as well as at the international level. We
believe that the Institute is an important center of excellence for
the study of ethnic groups in Thailand and neighboring countries.
This expertise and scholarship ensures that graduate students studying
in 4 programs: Ph. D. in Linguistics, M.A. in Linguistics, Culture and
Development, Language and Culture for Communication and Organization
Development are equipped with the very best tools and knowledge for
research in their chosen field. Although the programs are mainly taught in
Thai, some are in English, the increasing numbers of foreign students have
expressed interest in our programs. The outstanding method of all
programs taught at the Institute is fieldwork in selected subjects or regions
for training or practicum. Our lecturers are keen on doing fieldwork in rural
areas as well as internationally. Therefore, students learn at both the
classroom level and from practical experience in real situations. Moreover,
